4mm/ OO Scale 3D printed kit of the Maunsell Schools Tender Snowploughs that ran on the British Rail Southern Region from 1964 to 1991.
A short history of the prototype
At the end of steam in the early 1960s on the British Railways system, the 40 members of Maunsell’s “V” class or “Schools” class locomotives were found to be redundant. Class 201 diesel electric multiple units had taken over much of their work on the Hastings route and withdrawals were complete by 1962.
During 1964, eight tenders were selected to be converted at Eastleigh in to independent snowploughs. Initially numbered in the Departmental Series “DS” numbering scheme, all were later renumbered with the addition of an “A” prefix from 1973 under the TOPS system. At this time they were also classified wagon code ZZV. They normally worked in pairs; the bread at either end of a Class 33 sandwich. Withdrawal came in the early 1990s.

The Model
Created from the ground up, this stunningly detailed kit is very easy to assemble with basic modelling skills and tools.
Unlike our other wagon kits, this DOES NOT come with wheels, but is compatible with a number of formats so the builder can choose. It can be built with 16mm spoked pinpoint wheels, 16mm plain axled spoked wheels, or 14mm spoked plain axled wheels. Parts are included for assembly with outside or inside frames and a shim is included if using 14mm wheels to bring the model up to the correct ride height.
The chassis frames are a single piece print, meaning you will not have to worry about building the chassis square and true; it already is!

To complete, the modeller will require:
- Superglue
- Paint
- Transfers / Decals – NOTE – TRANSFERS ARE AVAILABLE AS AN OPTION – ONE SHEET OF TRANSFERS WILL BE ENOUGH FOR ALL EIGHT RUNNING NUMBERS IN BOTH LIVERIES – IF YOU ARE ORDERING MORE THAN ONE KIT, PLEASE ADD ONE TO THE BASKET WITH DECALS AND ADD OTHERS WITHOUT
- Couplings (NEM or otherwise) – a single NEM pocket is included at the buffer end of the chassis.
- Basic tools – pliers, fine files, filler
As with our other kits, the design emphasis has been “uncompromised detail and incredibly easy construction”. We estimate a modeller with average skills can complete this kit to a very high standard within 2 hours (not including painting and paint preparation).
We have provided a handy painting guide for modellers of either the pre-TOPS or TOPS era.
SB, via web feedback –
The Schools SR snowplough kits are 12A’s most ambitious project yet. Super easy to build and giving a really nice finished product. Support is also excellent when I lost a small part! I have finished them using two rattle cans from Halfords (not my usual method!) and the finish is excellent. Transfers to do all the fleet are included. A much needed gap in any Southern Region fleet has now been plugged.
